Year 1 – Our Learning Journey: “’Tis the Season”

What We’re Learning This Term

Maths
We’ll start by exploring addition and subtraction, learning how to find the missing part by taking a smaller number away from a whole number. Later, we’ll move on to geometry, investigating 2D and 3D shapes and spotting patterns.

English
In our Little Wandle phonics sessions, we’ll continue with Phase 3, building on the sounds learned in Phase 2.
Our focus texts this term are:

• The Vanishing Lake by Paddy Donnelly
• Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak
• Rain by Sam Usher

We’ll retell stories, create story maps, write our own sentences, and enjoy lots of fun activities.
Willow Class will visit the school library every Tuesday.

Science
We’re continuing to explore the properties of everyday materials through hands-on investigations. Some exciting experiments include testing which materials are magnetic and discovering what happens when objects are frozen in ice.

Computing
This term, we’ll learn how to present data using pictograms and practise giving and following instructions in the correct order.

Geography
Our topic is weather! We’ll keep weather diaries and even present our own forecasts.

Art
We’ll create portraits using a variety of techniques such as collage, crayon, pencil, chalk, and pastels. We’ll also study Pablo Picasso’s work and compare it with other artists.

PE & Wild Woods
PE days are Tuesday and Thursday—please send your child to school in their PE kit on these days.

• Willow Class: Wild Woods on Fridays (starting 14th November)

RE
We’ll be thinking about special things and special people. Children will have the chance to share an important item with the class.

PSHE
Our focus is Celebrating Differences. We’ll talk about similarities and differences, what bullying is, who to talk to if we feel sad or bullied, how to make new friends, and why our differences make us unique.
