Our Behaviour Values
Our Character Education
We teach our school values through Character Education. At Elmtree Infant and Nursery Infant School we have different character words which are introduced and strengthened throughout the school year. The character words represent positive character attributes that enable pupils to become confident, well-rounded individuals who have a life-long love for learning. The character words are referred to as ‘character muscles’ by pupils and staff as this emphasises that we each possesses a full range of these characteristics and through conscious practice and focus they can be made stronger. This is part of our Growth Mindset approach, based on the work of Carol Dweck. See examples below.

British Values
Democracy
We listen to children's and parents' voice. Our school behaviour policy is clear, demonstrating that children are expected to be: Ready, Respectful, Safe and Kind. Children and parents have the opportunity to have their say/ vote on issues pertaining to school improvement. Children can further vote for House Captains and other pupil voice ambassadors.
The rule of law
We consistently reinforce our high expectations for all children. Children are taught the value and reasons behind our rules and expectations: that rules are there to protect us; and that everyone has a responsibility to be safe and keep each other safe.
Individual Liberty
Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young children to make choices safely, through our provision of a safe environment and empowering teaching. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms in a safe and respectful way.
Mutual Respect
Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy is based on "Respect". The children are taught about respect and how to be respectful. They further learn about the rights of the child and how they can support each other to enjoy their rights as part of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
We are an inclusive school. We aim to enhance children's understanding of different faiths and beliefs by participating in a range of celebrations throughout the year. Children have the opportunity to learn about cultures through specific units of work and by taking part in inclusive events. The broader a child's experiences, the more confident and effective they are likely to be at contributing to Britain's diverse society. We would love to have even more visitors from members of the community with varying faiths and beliefs - please get in touch if you would like to meet our children.
